"When we first moved to Columbia (SC), we were on the lookout for a good local bank to use for our banking needs. A few of our friends recommended us to Grow Financial Federal Credit Union, as they have been an established local credit union for the Columbia area for many years. We went into the branch and had a pretty good experience with the account agent who helped us to open our accounts.
We used their services with no problem for over a year. Each time we came in for our banking needs we were always greeted with politeness and respect. We didn’t have any problems with our everyday interactions. Sometimes the account reps were busy, but in general we are always able to get seen with very little wait time. They handle their clients very well with their banking needs.
A few months later we decided it was time to shop for a car. Having been faithful members we decided to go with Grow to finance the purchase of our car. After all, credit unions are normally a good place to get an auto loan at a good rate with very little hassle.
The process was fairly straight forward and we got a decent rate on our auto loan. The payment process was simple, and after about a year of paying for the car we decided that we wanted to just pay off the car using one of our zero interest credit cards that we had at the time.
My wife contacted the branch and asked them several times if we would be able to pay off the car using the credit card. The teller confirmed to her that it would be just fine, and she confirmed the hours of operation to be able to make the payment. This was good news for us as it would give us the remaining $5,000 we owed at 0%.
When we arrived the teller tried to run our card and told us that it was declined! I was extremely confused as I knew that the particular card did not have a balance on it, and it was open and active. I had to step outside to talk with the credit card company. They explained to me that the teller had tried to run the card as a cash advance. Why would they try a cash advance which carries extremely high interest? Who does that?
We were able to get it sorted out, but I was frustrated that the teller did not ask us or confirm before they went to process the payment the way that they did. It would have saved a lot of trouble.
All in all, I would have to say that as a bank account holder and client Grow Financial Credit Union is ok, and they have been around for a while, which is very good, but as a lender I would probably go with a different company next time. They need to understand things a little better when it comes to payoff options for their customers.
Overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars for a little lack of organization when it comes to auto financing."
